Join us for a special five-night return to Kishindo Conservation Reserve, home of Tiger Canyon, in South Africa’s Free State province. This is a destination we have visited several times over the years, and we are genuinely excited to return.

Tiger Canyon offers something very different from a traditional African safari. Set among the dramatic grasslands and rugged hills of the Free State, the reserve is home to a free-ranging population of Bengal tigers, along with a variety of indigenous African wildlife. Separate from the tigers, there is also a reserve with cheetahs. The combination creates an unusual and highly photographic safari experience.

A Return to a Favorite

We have been fortunate to visit Tiger Canyon several times in the past, and each visit has reinforced why we enjoy this unique reserve. The landscape, wildlife and changing light provide outstanding photographic opportunities, while the relatively small number of guests creates an intimate safari atmosphere.

We are especially eager to return in August 2028. The winter season brings cooler temperatures and generally dry conditions, often producing excellent visibility and beautiful morning and late-afternoon light. With less vegetation than during the summer months, wildlife can also be easier to locate and photograph.

And, of course, we are looking forward to seeing the tigers again.

The Safari

Our stay includes five nights at Kishindo Conservation Reserve, giving us several full days in the reserve rather than trying to experience Tiger Canyon as a quick stopover.

The emphasis will be on photography. We will take advantage of game drives and the reserve’s unique setting to look for tigers and the other wildlife that inhabits the area. We will have opportunities to work with the changing light throughout the day, photograph animal behavior and capture the spectacular Free State landscape.

Tiger Canyon is not simply about checking a tiger off a wildlife list. The reserve provides an opportunity to photograph a species rarely encountered in a wild setting while also enjoying the African wildlife and scenery surrounding it.

Tigress Julie Lodge

Our five-night stay will be at Tigress Julie Lodge, an extraordinary lodge overlooking the Tiger Canyon landscape. The 3 guest room/1 guide room lodge itself is part of what makes a stay here so memorable. After a morning or afternoon in the reserve, we return to a beautifully appointed and intimate setting where the surrounding landscape and wildlife remain very much a part of the experience. The lodge offers comfortable accommodations, excellent meals and spectacular views, with the opportunity to relax and enjoy the African wilderness between game drives. Having stayed here on previous visits, we know firsthand how special Tigress Julie Lodge is—and we are particularly excited to return. It is the perfect base for our photography adventure at Tiger Canyon.

Convenient Johannesburg Connection

We have designed the trip to make getting to Kishindo as simple as possible.

The trip includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein
  • Private transfers between Bloemfontein and Kishindo Conservation Reserve
  • Four nights at Kishindo Conservation Reserve / Tiger Canyon
  • Safari activities and game drives during our stay
  • Return transportation to Bloemfontein for the flight back to Johannesburg

This arrangement eliminates the need for guests to arrange their own domestic flights, rental cars or long-distance transfers.

Why Return to Tiger Canyon?

There are many places in Africa where you can photograph lions, elephants, leopards and other iconic wildlife. Tiger Canyon is different.

Here, our primary photographic subject is one of the world’s most recognizable and elusive cats—the Bengal tiger—in a setting designed around conservation and allowing these animals to roam over a substantial natural landscape.

Having visited several times, we also know the reserve and have an appreciation for what makes it special. That familiarity allows us to concentrate on photography rather than simply trying to figure out the destination for the first time.

We’ve been here before. We know what awaits us. And we’re eager to go back.

Photography-Focused Safari

As with our other photographic safaris, this trip is designed for photographers rather than simply sightseeing.

We will spend our time looking for opportunities to create compelling images—not just record wildlife encounters. That means paying attention to light, backgrounds, animal behavior, positioning and the surrounding landscape.

August can be particularly rewarding for photography, with crisp winter mornings, clear skies and the possibility of beautiful golden light later in the day.

Whether your goal is a powerful tiger portrait, an image showing behavior, or a photograph that places the animal within the expansive South African landscape, Tiger Canyon offers possibilities that are difficult to duplicate elsewhere.
