Itinerary Summary:

July 20: Arrival in Durban; ground transfer to Mkuze area (Zimanga region); overnight en route or direct to Zimanga if timing allows.
July 21–27: 7 nights at Zimanga Game Reserve, combining hide sessions and traditional game drives.
July 28: Morning game activity; midday checkout and ground transfer back to Durban.

Overview:
This immersive photographic safari begins on July 20, 2026, with your arrival and overnight stay in the Durban area. On this safari, we have chartered the entire reserve. This means the only guests at the reserve will by our group. This allows us maximum flexibility with regards to sightings and/or any daily modifications we need to optimize your experience.

On the morning of July 21, we will have a ground transfer from Durban, South Africa to the renowned Zimanga Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. You will spend 7 nights at the reserve, from July 21 through July 27, with a return to Durban on the evening of July 28. Zimanga is uniquely designed for photographers, offering world-class hide sessions and dynamic game drives in a rich and varied landscape.

We have been to Zimanga many times in the past and over the years, we have learned that late July is a prime you want dependable game viewing at Zimanga with dry comfortable weather. July falls in the dry season, offering some of the best wildlife viewing conditions of the year.

Wildlife Viewing at Zimanga is a mix of game drives and viewing from specially constructed hides at waterholes. Arguably one of the best South Africa destinations for photographers. Excellent sightings of cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and buffalo, with low vehicle density and high-quality guiding. Hide Access adds a significant advantage over traditional reserves—day and night photographic opportunities not found elsewhere in South Africa. This is A Big Five reserve and game sightings are very reliable.

Photographic Hides:

Zimanga’s hides are professionally designed with the input of award-winning wildlife photographers. These hides offer unparalleled opportunities for close-up, low-angle, and well-lit images, often in controlled lighting environments. The hides are equipped with gimbals, blackout curtains, and soundproofing, creating an ideal space for unobtrusive photography. Expect:

Overnight Hide Sessions: These are a highlight, offering nighttime opportunities for leopard, hyena, civet, porcupine, and more using dim red lighting or infrared options.
Lagoon Hide: Excellent for birds, smaller mammals, and dramatic reflections. Morning and late afternoon light is ideal here.
Scavenger Hide: A chance to photograph vultures, jackals, and hyens feeding, often producing action-packed, dramatic imagery.
Bhejane Small Bird Hide (don’t let the name fool you): Many don’t go to Africa thinking of ‘small birds’, but the birds in the region are strikingly beautiful and great photo subjects. The crested guinea fowl at Bhejane hide are real showstoppers and have been a favorite for years. Recently, there has been a change to viewing at this hide. The Zimanga team have modified the side banks of the waterhole and an incredible wildlife transformation has occurred! Now, don’t be surprised to have a giraffe, nyala or a herd of impala stop by for a sip of water.
Bee-Eater Hide (seasonal): July may offer limited activity here, but check locally for updates.

Game Drives:

Zimanga offers traditional open-vehicle safari drives across over 6,500 hectares of diverse habitats including bushveld, savanna, riverine forest, and rolling hills. Key highlights:

Big Game: Lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and cheetah are all found here, though Zimanga is a Big Five reserve but we will admit that free-roaming leopards are not a dependable sighting.
Cheetah Tracking: Excellent chance of photographing cheetahs on foot or in-vehicle, as they are relatively habituated to vehicles.
Birdlife: July is excellent for raptors and bushveld species; the reserve hosts over 400 bird species.
Golden Light: The winter sun in July is lower in the sky, giving photographers excellent golden-hour conditions both morning and evening.

Drives are typically 3–4 hours, with ample time allocated to positioning for ideal photography and following interesting behavior. Vehicles have low occupancy, allowing ample space and freedom of movement for gear.

Why Late July Is a Prime Time for Game Viewing in KwaZulu-Natal

✅ Dry Season Advantages:

Sparse Vegetation: The bush is thinner, making animals easier to spot and photograph.
Water Scarcity: Wildlife congregates around permanent water sources such as rivers, pans, and man-made waterholes, creating predictable hotspots for viewing.
No Rain: Skies are typically clear, providing consistent lighting and minimal disruptions to drives.

Cooler Temperatures: Comfortable for both wildlife and guests. Predators and other animals may stay active later into the morning and become active earlier in the afternoon. Expect temperatures to be (5–10°C / 40–50°F); warm, dry afternoons (20–25°C / 68–77°F) during your time at Zimanga.

Golden light: Excellent for photography due to dust and atmospheric clarity.
Cool mornings sometimes bring mist or haze, creating moody photographic conditions.

Wildlife of Zimanga Game Reserve

On safari in Zimanga, you can expect to see a diverse mix of iconic African wildlife, with a strong emphasis on photogenic species and unobtrusive viewing experiences.

Commonly Seen Mammals at Zimanga:

Zebra (Burchell’s)	Often seen in mixed herds with wildebeest and impala.
Blue Wildebeest	Common in open areas and around water.
Impala	Abundant. Great behavior photography at waterholes or in hides.
Nyala	Particularly good sightings; thrives in riverine forest.
Warthog	Frequent, especially near open clearings and water points.

One (1) arrival night in Durban’s nearby resort of Ballito. Upon arrival we will all meet up for a ‘meet and greet’ dinner prior to our next day transfer to Zimanga.

The Cost

The cost of this all-inclusive safari is $7,500 per person double occupancy. We have 4 single rooms at the lodge. If a single room is desired, a $500 single supplement is required. The same rate applies for each participant regardless of whether they are doing photography or not.
Due to the limited number of spaces available, if a solo guest is willing to share a room and we can match with another guest of the same gender, we will do so.

Deposit and Payment Plan– To reserve your space, a non-refundable deposit of 35% is required. The remaining cost will be split into two equal payments due with one due 6 months prior to departure and the final payment due 3 months prior to departure.

Final Notes:

Wildlife activity is unpredictable, but Zimanga is structured to maximize sightings and photo quality, particularly with the help of real-time updates from staff. This safari offers a highly productive, creative, and immersive photography experience, with an unmatched combination of controlled hide photography and natural game-viewing exploration.

South Africa is a stable country, but the world is changing, and Africa is changing with it. We will attempt to adhere to this itinerary as much as possible. However, certain conditions (medical emergencies, political, climatic, environmental, or cultural) may necessitate changes in the itinerary. We reserve the right to alter any itinerary at any time, if necessary. We will attempt to notify participants of changes as far in advance as possible. Costs incurred by such changes will be the responsibility of the participant.
